List #2

Here are some things from my previous list that I have gotten DONE:
  1. Bought two pairs of jeans (huge accomplishment!)
  2. Got some shades. Ok, so they aren't Gucci (like the ones I bought in France and then destroyed by stepping on after they fell into gravel! ) but maybe I'll find some over there!
  3. I always need new makeup before a trip it seems. So I got some fabulous eyeliner (Bobbi Brown Gel Liner) thanks to LBR's perfect suggestion!
  4. Made peace with the fact that The Shrinking Dollar is not going to cooperate. Cheese, bread, wine by the refill jug and a slab of saucisson won't be too expensive and make great meals!
  5. Bought two unlocked, quad band cell phones on Ebay at a great price.

Now, things I NEED to do:

  1. Plan out and buy needed items for two dinner parties we're having for French Friends; Mexican dinner and then an American BBQ. (Uncooked tortillas from Costco, corn tortillas, Taco seasoning, Ortega chilies...more things I'm sure!)
  2. Get everything for a Baby Shower I'm throwing for a friend over there. (Baby showers are typically an American tradition and not done by the French. I've got my work cut out for me! Games, prizes, decorations...buying it all and packing it!)
  3. Make DVD to show friends and family over there, of over here.
  4. Get some comfortable-enough-for-walking-on-cobblestones-yet-fashionable shoes.
  5. Choose and buy the right SIM cards for our phones. HELP!!!
  6. Make my handwritten list of things to pack.
  7. Get my HP notebook back from HP.
  8. Work on French.

I especially need some experienced help for my SIM cards purchase. I want one with free incoming in France, and lots of textos to save us money on phone calls. It seems very expensive to use mobile phones in France, unlike here where I have 800 anytime minutes, free after 7 and weekend minutes, and free incoming.

I am so happy you love the BB gel liner!! I wish I could be in someway helpful with your new list. I suppose if you took me with you to France I could help you with the dinner party and even help you pack. That baby shower, however, you are on your own!!
Please post the shoes you buy and tell us how well they work when you get them to France.
Have a great weekend!!!
Merci,
LBR

I'd just wait until you got here to buy the SIM cards - it's much cheaper, and you can get them from just about any phone store.

The big three (SFR, Bouygues & Orange) all secretly work together to set their prices, so it won't really matter which one you pick, as they all pretty much offer the same thing. And all French cell companies offer free incoming calls (hence the elevated prices).

As for the textos, I'm assuming you'll get pay as you go, so you'll have to credit to put on it, which you can use for either text messaging or calling.

Hope that helps!

Wow, you've got your work cut out for you! How long is it now until you leave? Well, I have absolute faith that you will get everything done. The fact that you have lists is half the battle won right there.

I really need to get that gel liner. Oh! By the way, I finally ordered the everydayminerals test kit! I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival and hope it's as great as you said it was! So far I haven't had any luck with mineral makeup, but hope springs eternal.

Salut,
Marjorie

Marjorie,
We are leaving in roughly 6 weeks! YAY and BOO (I have so much to do)
About the minerals, make sure you apply with a kabuki type brush (it doesn't give correct coverage with just a powder brush). If you don't have one, they have a nice one for about $4 at Target. Make sure you apply the mineral makeup in layers. I usually do 2 or 3 light layers. In circular motion ;)
You can go to BE website and see how to apply. They have the best tips!

Sam,
Thanks for your input, it does help! I recently read that they will not sell you SIM cards anymore without a proof of residency...do you think that's the case? I found a bunch on Ebay (all from the Big 3 you mentioned) and they seem rather inexpensive. I wonder if I should get one and then just top up when i get to a Tabac in France. ?

LBR,
I do love the BB liner! I look forward to applying it each day! I'm not crazy about the brush, but I think I got a dud. I can still work with it though.
( As for the shower, I felt bad even mentioning it as I knew you'd be the first one to read my post probably.)
And hopefully I will find the shoes next Wed when I go out of town to shop. I will post for sure!!!!
You, too, have a great weekend...

It's highly possible that things have changed, especially knowing Sarko. Though a friend of mine was here from the US a few weeks ago and she bought a sim card just fine...like everything in France, it probably depends on who's selling it to you and what kind of mood they're in! LOL

How much are the ones on ebay? Here, they'll run you around 15-25€, but I guess with the dollar being so low, you might actually be able to find a better deal on ebay! And you probably know this already, but just in case - French sim cards expire after six months of non-use. It's kind of a pain!

Bonjour, CC!

Enjoy the planning! I've found that half the fun is the anticipation and the run-up to the actual trip. Plus you get to fantasize about all the things you can buy while you're there, which obviously you must share with us when you return. ;-)

How long did it take for you to get your everydayminerals kit? I keep watching the mailbox, although in all fairness I only ordered it two days ago. ;-) Right now I'm using Neutrogena's cream to powder foundation, which works well, but I don't like having to apply it with a sponge. I fear it's rubbing off the sunscreen before I've had a chance to step outside.

Will definitely go and buy a kabuki brush. My mom has one, and she raves about it.

Salut,
Marjorie

Marjorie,
Did you get your makeup yet? It only takes like 3 days to get mine.
Let me know when you get it :)

Dear CC,

No, I haven't got it yet, but I only ordered it late last week, so I expect it any day now. I can't wait! I totally missed the Sephora free shipping deadline yesterday (no excuse, esp. since I'm the one who posted about it the other day!), so I'm bereft of new makeup this week.

Waiting by the mailbox,
Salut,
Marjorie

Marjorie,
Here is where I panic after talking up something! :) I hope you love the makeup as much as I do...but if you don't, well, at least it was almost free, non? lol!
Hope you got it today! Let me know!

I use Skype when I am abroad. The laptop hasn't had an issue finding a wifi connection. I'm sure you are looking for something while on the road so I think you can rent a cell phone so you don't have to sim swap.
